The collection of the Library mainly comprises works on naval engineering, nautical technology, and port engineering. Its collection also includes maritime information of Portugal, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Taiwan and Hong Kong. At present the library houses around 5,300 books, some 300 periodicals and 200 educational videos and compact disks.
The Library's reading room offers a wide variety of reference materials. These include: technical dictionaries such as dictionaries of naval engineering, maritime dictionaries and dictionaries of port engineering and shipping; encyclopaedias such as maritime encyclopaedias, encyclopaedias of Portuguese and Brazilian cultures and Chinese encyclopaedias of transport; manuals and guidebooks such as world maritime handbooks and port guidebooks published by Lloyds; yearbooks and annual publications such as The Annual of China Maritime Law and The Puerto Rico Shipping Association Yearbook. In addition, the Library houses a large collection of International Maritime Organization publications.
A wide variety of periodicals in the fields of navigation, shipbuilding and shipping as well as journals concerning astronomy, geography and meteorology are also available at the Library.
The Library is open to the public, who can borrow books there. The Library's opening hours are as follows: Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 13:00, 14:30 - 17:30 (except public holidays). Meanwhile the Library may be open from 17:45 -18:45 in the evening depending on the needs of classes.
